Greetings,

The 2007 Legislative Session is well under way. Now

that the final Revenue Forecast has been released, we

can begin the wrap up process and hopefully end the

session early.  My focus for the last weeks will be to

put economic resources where they are really needed.

I am continuing to represent the people of my district

here in Salem.  I am sending out this newsletter to

inform you about some recent successes and to alert

you about an upcoming town hall.

Read ahead to learn more about what has happened so

far in the session.  Two important healthcare bills I

carried, Senate Bill 341 and House Bill 2773, will soon

be awaiting the Governor’s signature. I can proudly say

that Oregonians are seeing the healthcare reform they

deserve.

Yours truly,

Laurie Monnes Anderson
State
Senator, District 25

School Nurses for All

I am proud to report that House Bill 2773 was passed

25 to 3 by the Senate on May 15, 2007.  The bill creates a

School Nursing Task Force that will be responsible for

recommending a plan to establish school nursing services

in all schools in Oregon.

Children come to school with minor illnesses, infections

and injury (i.e. skin infections, bronchitis, sinusitis).  Many

children need help in monitoring their asthma or diabetes.

Disabled children need nursing protocols written, and

their health care supervised in the public school system.

When children do not have access to health care, we all suffer.

Without health care, kids do not do as well in school.

Additionally, we have an obligation to our children to ensure

they have the knowledge, skills and opportunities to pursue

their dreams.  School nurses play an extremely important role

in our school system.

Safe Practices Bill

Senate Bill 341 (A), the Safe Practices Bill I sponsored,

is expected to pass the House today or early next week.

SB 341 is a safety bill that requires health facilities

performing tissue or corneal transplants to obtain

tissue from registered and regulated tissue banks or

eye banks.

We want every provider who does transplants to be

prohibited from buying from unsafe, unaccredited

suppliers.  We also want the personnel who handle

these tissues to also meet the high standards of an

accredited association.

Revenue Forecast

The Final Revenue Forecast for the next two years was

released this week and Oregon’s economy continues to

be strong.

The Co-Chairs of Ways and Means would like to allocate an

additional 35 million dollars to community colleges,

including Mount Hood Community College. Economic

and Workforce Development would receive

5 million dollars in additional resources, which bodes

well for small businesses.  Healthcare could see a much

needed increase of 2 million dollars, which will be used to

help make healthcare more affordable and efficient.
